The Industrial Revolution 4.0 is changing lives, work and even communication. Immersive technology adaptation in daily routines shows how the paradigm shift takes place. Then, humans are the most reliable workforce one could hire and indeed a highly utilized manpower too. However, presently technology and digitization are changing our lives completely to an unimaginable dimension. Human manpower is being replaced to products of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Thus, how are we supposed to ensure our sustainability? By the year 2025, more tech advancements like internet of things (IoT), virtual and augmented reality, advanced robotics, etc are highly expected to dominate the market.
In context of communication, many questions may rise on the go and does that mean communication students do not have their future promised? Does that mean their degree is useless? Don&rsquo;t gasp or groan, because there is no such thing!

Communication studies isn&rsquo;t a new phenomenon as it has been nearly 43 years since the programme was offered in Malaysia and its importance keeps increasing every year. It all started when the public universities in Malaysia pioneered the communication and other related studies to the local students, followed by private institutions. The range of studies then grew wider, and its branches were diversified.
Technically, communication is not a stand-alone element as it infuses itself in almost all aspects. In this context, the amalgamation of communication and media is imperative as it is able to transfer knowledge and affects behavioural changes of the public. Theoretically, media approach had evolved so much as presently it is all about digitization.

It acts as a mean, support system to keep media, public relations, and other creative/professional industries alive. As media digitization continues to grow, in the next five years, talents of communication shall be consistently recruited. Here is why I say so. Social media, we name it, its usage and purposes have evolved so much, now we couldn&rsquo;t imagine our lives without it. From buying your favourite snacks to connecting with your favourite people, sharing opinions, and finding like-minded opinions, social media assimilates in our lives completely. This is a basic example of media digitization.

Moving to deeper insight, high importance of social media in human lives have brought in the emergence of social media influencers? Yet again, communication plays a key role here. What do these social media influencers do? All we see is they talk, promote, sell products on social media platforms. Most of us do have our favourite set of social media influencers and sometimes we just buy things they sell/promote just because we adore them (most people are guilty of doing this, hehe).

But wait! What they really do? Social media influencers influence people in terms of business, livelihood, politics, opinions and entertainment. They don&rsquo;t just sell products in there, but they sell their opinions too. Here is where the subtle non-verbal communication takes place.

Having technology infused in almost everything, communication is certainly a key element that constantly undergoes changes. Creative industries that communicate ideas to people also come under the roof of media digitization. Advertising companies as an example shall make use of the tech advancements to produce more engaging advertisements to promote a product/service/idea. This is an exemplary approach on how students with degree in advertising can make use of the media digitization and make profit out of it.

Thus, students with their communication degrees will continuously stay relevant because they are the thinkers, they set the rules, they invent new things, and they are the policymakers.

Mass Comm or Language Students-Doomed or Super Rich by 2025?

When living in the busy city, we can&rsquo;t help to think that we need more greenery within the city. When you look at most major cities, there&rsquo;s at least either one large section of green such as Central Park in New York City or even a park within the city such as the Lake Gardens Park or Taman Tugu right here in KL.

If you&rsquo;re one to go outdoors a lot or perhaps go to Bangsar often, you may have seen a place called Kebun-Kebun Bangsar which is a community garden within the city. It&rsquo;s situated along Lorong Bukit Pantai, Bangsar, where there&rsquo;s Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) electric pylons.
In fact, Kebun-Kebun Bangsar is violating their temporary occupancy license (TOL) for their nursery purpose as they had just been slapped with an eviction notice by the Federal Territory office of the department of the director-general of lands and mines (JKPTG).

The post was shared via their Instagram page where the notice was dated 23 June 2022 where they are in violation of Section 425 (1) of the National Land Code for using land located underneath high-voltage power lines owned and maintained by TNB without permission.
The violation states that they can be fined RM500,000 and jailed for five years if they fail to comply and remove all structures on the property. Additionally, the office states that they will not be entertaining any appeals after sending out the notice.
Violation of terms of license
Malay Mail reported that the office stands by the decision to evict the garden after violating the TOL. According to Datuk Muhammad Yasir from JKPTG, the office does encourage the gardening efforts but they are still required to abide by stipulated conditions.
&ldquo;Conditions for approved nurseries include the types of crops and no permanent structures are allowed under power lines, according to technical specifications from Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB),&rdquo; said Yasir.
The eviction notice also comes by written and verbal complaints submitted by the residents of the area due to the garden rearing live stock within the property. The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) had ordered the garden to remove the animals back in 2020 as the chickens, ducks and sheep within the property had caused the to be full of flies, noise disturbances from the animals as well as odour pollution within the housing area.
Hopes for Kebun-Kebun Bangsar to continue on running

62-year-old Ng Sek San who founded the community garden had thanked all of those who helped maintained the garden which was backed by the DBKL on a two-year license. &nbsp;However, he failed to realise that the city did not extend their license beyond 2018 and only came to know about it when they received the eviction notice.
Although several letters of appeal were submitted to the relevant authorities, there had been no avail. Even 19 out of 20 of the residents who live adjacent to the garden had supported them.
&ldquo;Every week, thousands come to our farm to acquaint themselves with nature. We want to be left alone to do our work peacefully. It must be protected and safeguarded by everyone, including City Hall and the other authorities.&rdquo; he said.
Farm praised by Prime Minister
Just recently before the eviction notice, Prime Minister Dato&rsquo; Sri Ismail Sabri Yaakob had praised the farm as fruits, vegetable and flowers have been harvested from the land and been distributed to those in need within the community as well as soup kitchens.

Additionally, the garden within the city had played a role to educate society on the effects of climate change.
Following the eviction threat, Ng fears that future volunteers will be driven away and it will be harder to maintain the garden if they are able to continue so.
It&rsquo;s hard to come by good things in life and sometimes I question, why can&rsquo;t authorities give a bit of slack and also talk it out with those occupying the land. At least they didn&rsquo;t build a full-on building on the property as a garden which helps supply the community is much more beneficial. 
I guess we&rsquo;ll have to wait and see what will happen to the garden but let&rsquo;s hope it&rsquo;s here to stay.

Despite how some people may say that Malaysians are sometimes racially divided, we all share one common love which is the love for sports (aside from our love for food at least).
Recently our diving queen Datuk Pandelela Rinong Pamg had bagged another medal as she finished 3rd place for the women&rsquo;s 10m platform during the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

Unfortunately, Pandelela fell short of the gold and silver medal who were won by China&rsquo;s Chen Ruxi and Quan Hongchan respectively. Pandelela had scored a total of 338.85 points which secured her bronze medal.
Although how much we Malaysians and her supporters love to see it, Pandelela had reacted in the most Malaysian way possible with a &ldquo;boleh lah&rdquo;!

A step-up improvement over her last performance

In a report by New Straits Times, this is Pandelela&rsquo;s second medal after winning Bronze in the 2015 edition in Kazan, Russia.
Plus, the win also shows that Pandelela has been performing better and more consistent as she had tallied 332.10 and 313.15 points during the preliminaries and semi-finals. Although she&rsquo;s the oldest competitor in the tournament, it&rsquo;s dubbed as a moment of &ldquo;redemption&rdquo; after the disappointing performance she had at the Tokyo Olympics where she was one of the favourites to earn a medal.
&ldquo;I guess we can say that this is my redemption after the Olympics. I see every success and failure as a motivation to do better. And I am always inspired to watch the Chinese divers perform,&rdquo; said Pandelela.

&nbsp;The issue of human trafficking has always been around for a while now but over the past few months, Malaysia&rsquo;s headlines have been reporting many cases of locals being human trafficked as they fall victim to job scams by syndicates.

Due to Malaysia&rsquo;s unstable economy, Malaysians of all ages have been looking out for jobs all over and some jobs were advertised online stating that it has high pay and great benefits. The victims then get attracted to and when they meet up with their new &ldquo;employer&rdquo; they get smuggled to countries such as Cambodia or Myanmar. From there, they are forced to conduct scam operations mainly targeting Chinese speaking individuals or foreigners.
Job syndicate arrested by authorities

With the authorities cracking down on these cases, it looks like these syndicates are slowly getting caught. One such recruiter who allegedly works with the syndicates has been arrested recently. PCA Public services and Complaints Department head, Datuk Seri Michael Chong had identified the man as &ldquo;Danny&rdquo; and he is an Indian-American who can speak fluent mandarin.
Danny frequently operates via social media luring the victims with ads of high paying jobs available abroad. After convincing the victim to apply for the job, he would personally meet the victims and picked them up in person before smuggling them through clandestine routes out of Malaysia to go Myanmar and Cambodia.
Victims were also held under ransom while they perform their job and negotiation between the syndicate and family are talked upon as many want their loved ones back home.
Victims participate in scam operations under tight watch
The victims later learn about the truth of the jobs they were getting into as members of the syndicates kept them under watchful eyes with armed guards 24/7 to ensure that they don&rsquo;t go against their jobs.
The victims were all kept within a compound on multiple floors where it&rsquo;s said to have over 300 people and many of them also included Malaysians.

In a report earlier this week, Danny is identified as the same recruiter who had duped two teenagers from Pahang to take up a &ldquo;customer service position&rdquo; before they were smuggled to perform a love scam operation in Myanmar.
As of now, Datuk Seri Michael Cheong says that their department currently has as many as 74 complains regarding job scams but so far, only 23 people have been rescued. Authorities are currently in the right direction towards rescuing victims as operations are still currently ongoing.
&nbsp;Hopefully these victims will soon return to home to their families. Although it&rsquo;s tough for authorities to catch all these syndicates but slowly does it. 
A reminder to all to not easily fall for job scams easily as it could mean life or death for yourselves. I don&rsquo;t think anyone would want to go through the mental trauma of being smuggled around to work as scammers.

As jokes can be fun and all, TikTok user Ping Zhi Chuah took the opportunity to make a TikTok stating about the struggles of going to 1 Utama without small change.

Ping had no small change and used a RM20 note to pay for his parking and in return, rather than getting notes back, he received RM18 of change in 50 cent coins (which were all new and shiny). The TikToker showed his frustration in a joking way saying how he now has all the coins while holding it in his hand.
Taking an opportunity
After that went viral, our favourite meme site MGAG took the opportunity to jokingly roast 1 Utama for not having TnG as one of their cashless parking options.

But today the joker gets outplayed as 1 Utama came back with the ultimate response to MGAG as they plugged a promo for their ONECARD parking system.

A grab driver in Sarawak had posted a video on TikTok where he stole the spot light with his &ldquo;ability&rdquo; to speak another language. Typically, we don&rsquo;t see Malays talking in Mandarin or any other Chinese dialects but this got netizens impressed&hellip; and confused.

Off the get go, it&rsquo;s impressive that a non-Chinese person can confidently and fluently talk the language but as you can see in the video, even the uncle at the stall was also left in a state of shock when trying to communicate with him. The man was too stunned to speak.
One possible reason why most of us wouldn&rsquo;t understand the language is due to the Grab driver speaking in a local dialect which only Sarawakians can understand or is because he really isn&rsquo;t talking in a mandarin?

Not too long ago, he had also gone viral when speaking Mandarin while at a motorcycle workshop. Although the Chinese man in the video didn&rsquo;t seem to understand what he&rsquo;s trying to say, his friends definitely had a good laugh as they were amazed at his speaking skills.

Do many Malaysians speak a Chinese language?

To be fair, most schools in Malaysia teach Mandarin primarily, in comparison to the other Chinese dialects.
In Malaysia, Chinese languages vary from Mandarin to other dialects such as Cantonese, Hakka and Hokkien. These dialects may also further vary upon the state you live in and family upbringings. At the moment, there is around 22.4% of Chinese ethnicity living in Malaysia but it doesn&rsquo;t specificy how many of them could speak which language / dialects as some classify themselves as a &ldquo;banana&rdquo; (unable to speak ANY Chinese language / dialect).

Netizens Stunned At Sarawakian Grab Rider Speaking Mandarin?

Everyone knows that Apple is a staple when it comes to brand identity out there. In fact, almost everyone wants an Apple product whether it being their iPhones, iPads or even the Macbook's.
But we all know one thing, to buy an Apple product, it could cost you an arm and a kidney. OK not really but it&rsquo;s really expensive and we undoubtedly know that.

Apple is now getting their hands into a financial service sector which allows customers to buy now and pay later (BNPL) scheme which is called Pay Later as an extension of Apple Pay (which is only available in the US for now).
The new feature will be rolling out with the upcoming iOS 16 this fall which will enable customers to make big purchases with instalments.

BNPL will allow users to split any purchases into four equal payments over the span of six weeks. The only condition is that customers are required to pay a quarter of the full amount upfront while the rest of the payments is made done every two weeks. For those who have Apple pay, the amount will be deducted out of the Wallet app either online or in-app using the Mastercard network.

The best part of it is that those taking the instalment plans from Apple will have a zero-interest rate. This makes the deal more attractive to those who can&rsquo;t pay the one lump sum.
The more unforgiving end of this instalment plan is that it&rsquo;s the risk of the youth or younger audience who&rsquo;s at least 73% of their customers to miss payments (cause you know some of them don&rsquo;t manage their money properly). It was reported that at least 43% of the Gen Z consumers are likely to miss one payment which leads them to an overdraft fee.
As of now the exact mechanism for the BNPL loans has not been announced but Apple says they would decision will be made by their treasury department. As for some of Apple&rsquo;s financial ventures is still handled by Goldman Sachs who oversees the Apple Card credit card, a new subsidiary called Apple Financing LLC will later be handling Apple Pay.
Will banks be involved when needing to approve of credit loans?

According to Apple, through this new subsidiary, they will be handling all the decisions and loans without a partner bank for its BNPL feature. As Apple Financing does not have a bank charter, Goldman Sachs and Mastercard will still be involved in the Pay Later scheme as they are qualified to issue the payment credentials.
Now the real question is if this scheme will be coming in Malaysia as Apple Pay is not available yet.

Can't Afford An iPhone Now, But Want One Anyways? Apple Introduces 'Buy Now Pay Later' Scheme

With modern times now, there&rsquo; been a lot of businesses being done fully online now and less people have been going to ATMs and using cash outside.
Businesses such as micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) should also adopt start adopting cashless transactions as it&rsquo;s fast + safe said Prime Minister Datuk Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

The Covid-19 pandemic had encouraged many methods of cashless payment and it&rsquo;s become common for many to not bring their wallets or cash out. In 2021 alone, ecash transactions alone amounted to RM50.5 Billion in comparison to RM29.6 Billion in 2020 he said.
&ldquo;This is the main reason why the ePemula programme is introduced. We want to encourage youth to embrace cashless transaction,&rdquo; he said when launching the ePemula initiative.
EPemula is another ecash programme set to benefit some two million youths and students in institutions of higher learning.
Under the programme, eligible youths between 18 and 20 as well as full-time students in institutions of higher learning will be given RM150 in ecash.

Another factor for the introduction of the Epemula programme is to help ease the financial burden of the youth.
&ldquo;We hope youths will spend the credit given to them wisely and support local businesses, especially the micro, small and medium scale industry so that these businesses can recover.
&ldquo;With more businesses back on track, there will be more revenue for the government and more people, especially the B40 group, can be assisted,&rdquo; he added.
Youth is an important part of nation-building

Increasing number of businesses using ewallets

Finance Minister Tengku Daruk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz mentioned that more shops have begun accepting payments via ewallets due to the pandemic.
Malaysia recorded a 60% increase in registrations for ecash, Duit Now and QR code transactions as of December 2021. Cashless transactions went up by 74.4% compared to 2020 as 1.1 billion such transactions were made in 2021.
Through the Epemula programme, Zafrul hopes that ecash payments will remain and support more digital financial initiatives.

"Go Cashless!" Prime Minister Encourages Malaysians

A famous hotpot restaurant in Beijing known as Ma Hong&rsquo;s Spicy Hotpot had been struggling to stay afloat since their opening in 2021. Due to the pandemic, the prices of beef had tripled and key ingredients now costing more than 50% of their original price.
"We sell it at the same price as before. Also with the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, everybody is hanging in there. It is the same all over Beijing. We are not the only restaurant suffering," said the owner of the restaurant.

Many Asian restaurants including street food hawkers are now having an issue if they should just take the hit of the higher cost or passing them on which could risk them losing loyal customers.

With the war going on, it certainly didn&rsquo;t help the fact that the price of ingredients and materials had increased and affected the supply chain which was already struggling since the Covid-19 pandemic.
Let&rsquo;s put Asia to perspective, there are many stalls which sell delicious street food at an affordable price. It became popular to many households but with the price of goods increasing, many are feeling the pressure of expense usage.
In an interview with an owner of a biryani store in Kranchi, Pakistan, Mohammad Ilyas states that the price of a kilogram of the seasoned rice dish is costly as it&rsquo;s now 400 Pakistani rupees (~RM9.26).

Meanwhile in Jakarta, a nasi goreng street vendor, Syahrul Zainullah had to unfortunately reduce the size of his servings instead of raising the price. He also didn&rsquo;t want to opt out for lower grade ingredients in fear of losing the taste that many like.

Meanwhile al the way up in South Korea, inflation of vegetables has been hitting many sellers hard. Choi Sun-hwa who&rsquo;s a 67-year-old kimchi shop owner had shared that she used to be able to get 10 heads of cabbage for a particular price and now with the inflation, she only received 7.

Honestly, I do hope that the economy would recover cause at this rate, fresh grads who just got jobs will really suffer to get their daily necessities especially if they live away from their parents. They&rsquo;ll need to think of rental, maintenance fees, petrol and many more things.

Crypto.com which is a cryptocurrency exchange app which is based in Singapore appears to be expanding it&rsquo;s workforce into Malaysia. According to a report by Rnggt, the company had released several vacancies for a full-time position in their company on LinkedIn.
For those who don&rsquo;t know about crypto.com, their app serves as a one-stop platform for users to access, buy, manage and sell their different types of cryptocurrency. In fact, the company also offers users a Visa prepaid card of varying tiers which allows users to spend their cryptocurrency under the company&rsquo;s own CRO native token.

Recently, the app had launched their NFT Marketplace where users can showcase their artwork or even buy and sell items.

Currently, one of the higher positions in offer would be the General Manager position where they will have to plan out the company&rsquo;s strategy, introduction and many more. Aside from that, there are management-based roles, talent acquisition, android app development, creative growth and many more.
On a side note, there&rsquo;s no saying if the jobs will require you to be in office as of now as we don&rsquo;t know if the company plans to open up a local office. The current jobs on offer are all listed as a remote job so you can be anywhere to do it as long as you have decent internet connection.

Well, the unfortunate truth is that the cost of living has been going up over the years and we can&rsquo;t do much about it. Like here&rsquo;s a reality check, we are paying more for a drink than our food now.

Yeah, let that thought sink in. Half the time we go out to eat, our drink is either half the price if not more than the price of some of our food.
With the rising cost of living, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob had announced a new policy to help those working. The minimum wage of workers will now be increased to RM1,500 a month. According to him, the new minimum salary will be raised will come into effect on 1 May and details will be finalised soon.
Human Resource Ministry and the Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Ministry will be holding discussions to identify the small and micro businesses who can&rsquo;t afford to pay the minimum RM1,500.
So far, no conditions have been revealed yet, but these selected small businesses may be able to &ldquo;delay&rdquo; the payment of the new minimum wage. Judging by this statement, it suggests that there will be a policy that will be implemented for this issue.

According to Bank Negara&rsquo;s living wage estimates, the above is the rough wages used for each of these categories for someone living in Kuala Lumpur back in 2016.
If a single adult needed 2,700 back in 2016, imagine now fast forwarding 6 years later. I&rsquo;m sure it&rsquo;s increased.
Just last week, Human Resources Minister M. Saravanan revealed that the minimum wage increase will be placed &ldquo;soon&rdquo; instead of waiting till the end of the year. Although this is good, not everyone is keen on the increase such as the Malaysian Employers Federation (EPF) as they claim that this is only beneficial for foreign workers in the country.
For those who didn&rsquo;t know, the National Wages Council is required to review the minimum salary every two years and changed will be subjected based off discussions. Back in 2012, the minimum wage was set at RM900 and in 2020 a revision was made to hike it to RM1,200 in 56 cities and towns. Unfortunately, even with the hike, some cities had remained at RM1,100.
Sometimes, I&rsquo;m pretty sure a lot of people question the government on how they look at the price of minimum wage. They clearly know that prices of items are going up but how high can it go? Even our vegetables are expensive now.
